Softwood LumberThe total volume of softwoods harvested in North America exceeds that of hardwoods many times over. There are a number of softwood companies who control logging rights on over one million acres (approximately 450,000 hectares). These companies dominate the markets for commodity softwood lumber. Specialty softwood products require more careful resource selection, slower production rates, and better customer communication than commodity products. Industrial items, requiring computer controlled drying, hands-on grading of clears, shop grades and width selections are most often produced by quality owner-operator companies. Marketing organizations like North American Wood Products and our key supplier partners are better able to match the unique qualities of the forest resource with the specific specialty product needs of individual customers.
